PF Secretary General Raphael Nakachinda criticized the diplomatic community in Zambia for supporting President Hakainde Hichilema, accusing them of living in shame due to his alleged failure to govern the country effectively. He specifically mentioned outgoing British High Commissioner Nicolas Woolley’s remarks about Zambia’s democratic and civic space as a way to cover up his supposed embarrassment.
Nakachinda also accused the UPND government of using various institutions such as the Electoral Commission of Zambia, law enforcement agencies, and the Judiciary to undermine democracy in the country through unlawful actions that erode the rule of law. This highlights his concerns about the state of governance under the current administration.
Despite internal processes within the PF that need to be completed before announcing a presidential candidate for 2026, Nakachinda hinted at former President Edgar Lungu’s potential return to power as both party and republican president. This indicates a strong belief in Lungu’s leadership capabilities within the party.
Additionally, Nakachinda issued a deadline to Mines and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe, giving him until June 30, 2024, to demonstrate Vedanta’s financial capacity to settle all creditors. He emphasized that the situation with KCM remains unresolved due to the investor’s alleged bankruptcy, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing issues.
Nakachinda also criticized the UPND leadership over the handling of KCM Liquidator Milingo Lungu’s forfeited $24 million, claiming that the funds were part of a pre-payment and not proceeds of crime. This showcases his skepticism towards the government’s actions and decisions regarding financial matters.
Despite attempts to reach Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa for comment, his unavailability by broadcast time left the situation unresolved, indicating potential challenges in obtaining official responses from key figures in the government.
