The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency has confiscated 10 bundles of second-hand undergarments from a trading establishment located near Soweto market in Lusaka, with an estimated value of K29,000.
The confiscated undergarments were apprehended based on information provided by whistleblowers, who reported that a specific entity was covertly selling used undergarments in violation of the regulations outlined in the Compulsory Standard ZS 559. This standard pertains to the inspection and criteria for accepting used textile products.
ZS 559 restricts the entry and trade of second-hand textile items that include undergarments like pajamas, nightgowns, men’s and women’s underwear, bras, camisoles, vests, and more.
In relation to this matter, Brian Hatyoka, the Head of Communications at the agency, has stated that the 10 confiscated bales will be promptly disposed of in accordance with the regulations outlined in the compulsory standards act no. 3 of 2017.
Mr. Hatyoka has stated that the agency has noticed certain importers and traders disregarding the prohibition on importing and selling second-hand undergarments within the nation. In order to safeguard the well-being and safety of consumers, he has issued a cautionary message regarding the implementation of strict penalties for those engaged in this unlawful trade.
In the meantime, Mr. Hatyoka has revealed that since January 2023 until now, the organization has removed over 40 bundles of second-hand undergarments worth over K180,000 from the market.
