Former vice president of Zambia, Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda, has been chosen to lead the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) in Madagascar for the upcoming presidential elections. This appointment highlights Miyanda’s experience and expertise in overseeing electoral processes.
In accordance with the Southern African Development Community Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, former Vice President Miyanda has been appointed by Hichilema as the head of the electoral observation mission in Madagascar. This appointment comes ahead of the scheduled elections on November 16, 2023, and was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Stanley Kakubo.
President Hakainde Hichilema has appointed former Vice President Brigadier General Miyanda as the head of the electoral observation mission in Madagascar. This appointment is in line with Zambia’s role as the Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation. Brigadier General Miyanda and his team will work with stakeholders in Madagascar and other Election Observation Missions to ensure that the upcoming elections in the Republic of Madagascar are credible, peaceful, free, and fair.
In a demonstration of Zambia’s dedication to upholding electoral integrity and promoting good governance in the SADC region, President Hichilema has appointed former Vice President Miyanda as the head of the electoral observation mission in Madagascar. This decision aligns with the principles and guidelines outlined in Article 4 of the SADC’s Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections of 2021.
Kakubo, expressed confidence in Miyanda’s ability to carry out the mandate of the mission in line with the principles and guidelines of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with the support of SADC Member States.
