Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to providing quality healthcare to all citizens through the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS), a critical component of the country’s emergency medical response system.
Today, Permanent Secretary for Information and Media, Mr Thabo Kawana, witnessed the evacuation of renowned musician General Ozzy, whose real name is David Banda, and his colleague from Monze to Lusaka following a fatal road traffic accident. The evacuation was conducted by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service, ensuring the patients received timely and specialised medical attention.
Speaking during the evacuation, Mr Kawana emphasised that Government remains dedicated to ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for every Zambian, regardless of geographical location or social standing. He noted that the Flying Doctor Service plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between rural and urban healthcare facilities by facilitating urgent medical evacuations and referrals.
The Permanent Secretary further highlighted that the Service is available to all citizens, stating that today’s evacuation — including that of General Ozzy — clearly demonstrates Government’s commitment to equal access to quality healthcare.
In addition to the Monze evacuation, Government is also facilitating the transfer of conjoined twins from Kapiri-Mposhi and another patient from Kabwe District to Lusaka for specialised medical care. These evacuations underscore Government’s resolve to ensure that even the most complex medical cases receive the necessary expert intervention.
Mr Kawana also disclosed that the Zambia Flying Doctor Service has recently strengthened its operational capacity through the acquisition of new aircraft, including a helicopter. The new additions are expected to enhance the Service’s ability to reach remote and hard-to-access areas swiftly and efficiently.
The expanded capabilities of the Flying Doctor Service are anticipated to significantly improve healthcare outcomes across the country. Government has reiterated that its approach to healthcare delivery remains proactive, inclusive and citizen-centred, with a strong focus on saving lives and ensuring that no Zambian is left behind.
