The Zambia Consumer Association-ZACA has urged the government to postpone the planned 9 percent increase in electricity tariffs until the country’s economy and energy sector stabilize.
The Energy Regulations Board-ERB is expected to approve a 9 percent tariff hike by Zesco this year, followed by another 14 percent increase next year.
ZACA Executive Secretary Juba Sakala highlights the current struggles faced by Zambians, including the search for alternative energy sources, high living costs, economic liquidity issues, and the impact of drought on people’s livelihoods.
Despite calls for the government to take action to reduce the cost of living, Mr. Sakala expresses disappointment that these pleas have been ignored.
He warns that any tariff increase by Zesco this year will only worsen the challenges faced by Zambians, as expensive electricity will lead to higher commodity prices and increased poverty for a population already grappling with social and economic difficulties.
