Local Government and Rural Development Minister Garry Nkombo has highlighted the issue of poor performance among local authorities, attributing it to a lack of coordination between controlling officers and elected leaders. This lack of collaboration has led to a failure in understanding each stakeholder’s responsibilities, ultimately hindering development in various constituencies and districts.
During a gala dinner for council senior officials nationwide, Mr. Nkombo expressed his concerns about certain officials who have been obstructing government development initiatives despite being given opportunities to rectify their actions. He specifically mentioned how some procurement officers are blamed for slow processes, when in reality, it is the officials themselves who are causing delays.
Additionally, Local Government Service Commission Chairperson Ackson Sejani emphasized the importance of enhancing service delivery to the public by boosting the capacity of staff within the councils. Mr. Sejani also stressed the need for local authorities to educate the public on the new operational methods of councils, ensuring that they understand and adapt to the current procedures in place.
