KAMAYOYO Kelvin, Technical Advisor for Zambezi River lndaba & Expo 2024 and BuyZed Campaign Chief Technical Advisor and Strategist has emphasised that the first-ever Zambezi River Indaba alongside the Zambezi Expo to be held in Livingstone the tourist capital of Zambia from the 25th to 28th March, 2024 will host the River Economics lndaba in Africa.
He noted that rivers are critical to the steady growth of any economy and African countries should invest more in harnessing both the commercial and social value of this natural resource for the benefit of its people. The top five (5) major rivers on the continent of Africa include the Nile, Congo, Niger, Zambezi and Orange and these great rivers continue to provide food, clean and safe drinking water, electricity, treasures and means of transportation for sustainable development and wealth creation for all.
Kamayoyo noted that these rivers are of great importance to a continent like Africa, where the majority of people live in poverty, with scanty resources and many regions remain dry. The Zambezi River lndaba & Expo 2024, therefore, is aimed at unlocking wealth potential and building regional and basin climate resilience in view of the unrelenting changing environment induced by climate variability. Essentially, the Zambezi River lndaba & Expo is a proactive Pan-African initiative anchored on home-grown innovations and embracing of eco-friendly practices for protecting health of rivers and safeguarding the ecosystem against the unforgiving climate change adverse events.
The first-ever Zambezi River lndaba & Expo 2024 will be held under the theme: “Promoting River Restoration, Climate Smart Investment, Technology and Water Harvesting for Sustainable Development and Job Creation” for all. The event will also provide a unique and informative platform that enables clear demonstration of scientific evidence about changes that are taking place in the Zambezi River Basin and River conservation ambit.
The Zambezi River Indaba & Expo, with climate change and river health protection as its overt running thematic areas, is much more relevant to the private sector, policy makers, smallholder farmers, women & youth, traditional leaders including children. Kamayoyo added that Zambezi River lndaba & Expo 2024 will also generate pragmatic action towards buttressing climate resilience through adaptation and mitigation of the impacts of climate change in the Southern and Eastern African regions.
Kamayoyo further stressed that the River Economics Indaba and other tailor-made plenary sessions to be held during the Zambezi River lndaba & Expo 2024 will comprehensively discuss the impacts that climate change developments are having on the Zambezi River Basin’s people and natural resources, thereby contributing to the much needed relevant documentation and study of the relationship between human populations and the health of rivers including the environment.
