Lusaka, Zambia – 27 June 2025 – In a bold move towards environmental responsibility, the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) has officially re-launched its “Greening the SAI” initiative, reinforcing its commitment to integrating sustainability into both internal operations and audit practices.

The initiative, which aligns with global efforts to combat climate change, was unveiled at a high-profile event attended by senior OAG officials, including Acting Auditor General Dr. Ron Mwambwa, Acting Deputy Auditor General for Corporate Services and Specialised Audits Mrs. Stella Nyonda, and Acting Deputy Auditor General for Audits Mr. Kenny Chilao.

A Strategic Response to Climate Change

Speaking at the launch, Ms. Theophilla Miyoba, Director of the Performance and Environmental Audits Directorate (PEAD), emphasised the initiative’s importance:

“Climate change poses a serious threat to our nation’s development. Through ‘Greening the SAI,’ we are taking concrete steps to reduce our environmental footprint while ensuring sustainability becomes ingrained in our organisational culture.”

Dr. Mwambwa praised PEAD for championing the cause and assured full management support, stating:

“This initiative reflects our dedication not only to financial accountability but also to environmental stewardship. We must lead by example in Zambia’s public sector.”

Key Pillars of the Initiative

The “Greening the SAI” initiative focuses on several actionable measures, including:

• Reducing paper consumption by accelerating digital transformation.

• Enhancing energy efficiency in OAG offices through sustainable practices.

• Promoting recycling and responsible waste management.

• Incorporating environmental considerations into audit frameworks.

Setting a Benchmark for Public Institutions

The OAG’s initiative positions it as a trailblazer in promoting sustainable governance within Zambia’s public sector. By embedding eco-friendly practices into its core functions, the institution aims to inspire other government bodies to adopt similar measures.

As the OAG moves forward with this green transition, stakeholders and the public can expect regular updates on its progress.

📸 Stay tuned for more developments as the OAG paves the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
