Lusaka, Zambia | 20 June 2025 – The government has called on Zambians to allow the family of former President Edgar Lungu to independently decide on his burial arrangements.
Speaking during Vice President’s Question Time in the National Assembly, Vice President Mutale Nalumango emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the late leader receives a dignified and befitting burial.
Mrs. Nalumango described the ongoing situation as “unfortunate” and urged against using the matter for political gain. She expressed regret over the standoff regarding the burial of the former president, stressing the need for unity and respect during this period.
Her remarks came in response to a question from Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament Steven Kampyongo, who sought clarity on the government’s efforts to maintain Zambia’s reputation as a leader in regional conflict resolution, given the current burial impasse.
In a related query, Bwengwa MP Michelo Kasauta questioned whether the Lungu family was committing a crime by keeping the former president’s body in South Africa.
Mrs. Nalumango clarified that the family has not violated any laws, stating that the government would have intervened if any legal breaches had occurred.
The government’s stance reinforces the importance of allowing the Lungu family the space and time to make decisions regarding the burial, free from external pressure.
