Lusaka, Zambia – Melo Media joins the nation in mourning the death of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who passed away on 5 June 2025. The veteran leader and statesman dedicated his life to public service, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, patriotism, and commitment to Zambia’s development.

President Lungu, who served as Zambia’s sixth Republican President from 2015 to 2021, was widely regarded as a progressive leader who championed infrastructure development, social welfare programmes, and national unity. His tenure saw significant investments in roads, hospitals, and education, earning him admiration from supporters across the country.

Born on 11 November 1956, Lungu rose through the ranks of law and politics, serving in various ministerial roles before assuming the presidency. Known for his calm demeanour and approachable leadership style, he remained an influential figure in Zambian politics even after leaving office.

Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with current and former leaders acknowledging his contributions to Zambia’s democracy. President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his condolences in an official statement:

“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we have been informed by his family of the passing of the sixth President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu. We therefore wish to officially inform the nation of this sad development and extend our heartfelt condolences to his widow, the sixth First Lady, Madam Esther Lungu, the entire Lungu family, the Patriotic Front Party, and the people of Zambia.

As Zambians, Africans, and more so as Christians, this moment calls for solemnity, unity, love, and compassion. At such times, we must mourn together as one people, above political affiliation or personal conviction, as we honour the life of a man who once held the highest office in our land.

In the spirit of patriotism and national solidarity, we urge all citizens to offer support and respect to the bereaved family and to uphold the values of peace, dignity, and togetherness that define us as Zambians.”

Citizens from all walks of life have taken to social media to share memories and pay their respects.

Beyond politics, Edgar Lungu was a devout Christian, a loving family man, and a mentor to many. His passing marks the end of an era, but his impact on Zambia’s socio-political landscape will endure.

Melo Media extends heartfelt sympathies to the Lungu family, his colleagues, and all Zambians grieving this loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Rest in Peace, Mr. President.
