Lusaka, Zambia – In a major development shaking the Zambian political landscape, Chawama Member of Parliament Tasila Lungu has been arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on allegations of money laundering and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.
The arrest stems from a contentious legal battle surrounding a farm in Sinda, valued at an estimated K8.8 million. Authorities claim the property acquisition does not align with Ms. Lungu’s known financial records.
This latest arrest follows a long-running legal saga over the ownership of the farm. In September 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court ordered the forfeiture of the property to the state. The court cited a stark contrast between the MP’s official income and the multimillion-kwacha asset. Reports indicate that between 2015 and 2021, Ms. Lungu’s documented earnings amounted to only ZMW 154,200, an amount significantly lower than what would be required to purchase and develop the property.
However, in January 2025, the Court of Appeal intervened, granting a stay of execution on the forfeiture, allowing Ms. Lungu to retain possession of the farm pending the outcome of her appeal. The sudden turn of events with her arrest now raises further questions about the trajectory of this case.
Ms. Lungu has since been released on police bond and is expected to appear in court soon. The public now awaits the unfolding of legal proceedings, with political analysts suggesting this case could have significant implications ahead of upcoming political engagements.
The news of her arrest has sent shockwaves across social media, with reactions flooding in from political figures, legal experts, and the general public. Some argue that this is a justified action in the fight against corruption, while others claim it is politically motivated.
