Lusaka, Zambia – February 6, 2025 – This afternoon, President Hakainde Hichilema had the distinguished honour of meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Shigeru Ishiba, in a momentous occasion that reaffirmed the strong, long-standing relations between the two nations.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1964, Zambia and Japan have cultivated a close and cooperative partnership, one that continues to flourish. During today’s meeting, two significant bilateral agreements were signed, marking a new chapter in this enduring friendship.
The first agreement, the Policy Dialogue Mechanism, aims to enhance regular political consultations, ensuring the continued alignment of policies and joint efforts in addressing global and regional challenges. The second agreement, the Bilateral Investment Agreement, is designed to promote and protect investments between Zambia and Japan, creating a pathway for sustained economic growth and mutually beneficial opportunities.
On behalf of the people of Zambia, President Hichilema expressed his sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba for Japan’s continued support in various key sectors, including mining, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
