Lusaka, Zambia – In a significant legal development, incarcerated former Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba has been ordered to pay the state over 800,000 United States dollars and 20 million kwacha. This order comes as a result of fraudulent contracts awarded to his company in 2013.
Lusaka Principal Resident Magistrate Sanford Ngobola delivered the verdict following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Magistrate Ngobola ruled that if Mr. Mwamba fails to surrender the money, a warrant of distress will be issued against his properties, which are deemed to be proceeds of crime.
The ACC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Timothy Moono, confirmed that the institution had filed an application seeking a court order for Mr. Mwamba to surrender the money he earned from corrupt deals. This ruling marks a significant step in the fight against corruption and the recovery of state funds.
