Lusaka, Zambia – In a promising development for residents of the Kanyama compound, a solution to the daily water challenges is taking shape. Nineteen out of twenty boreholes have been successfully sunk since drilling commenced in May 2024 in Lusaka’s Kanyama constituency. This initiative aims to replace shallow wells and improve access to clean water for over 4,000 residents.

Funded by the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, the project to upgrade Kanyama’s water facilities is set to make a significant impact. Project Manager Muyakuka Kabisa detailed the scope of work, which includes setting up water kiosks in areas not connected by the Lusaka Water Supply Connection Company (LWSCC).

In communities without a water supply, the project will see the installation of 10,000-litre capacity water tanks, ensuring ample storage for the newly drilled boreholes. Kabisa stated, “We are going into the stage of equipping the boreholes. We have already started equipping some of them, which will be operational soon. We are at the stage where we are equipping the facilities so that the residents can start benefitting.”

Kanyama Member of Parliament Monty Chinkuli expressed optimism about the positive impact of improved access to clean water. He highlighted that it would help address issues of water-borne diseases, including cholera, which typically arise during the rainy season. “I want to thank the government for the initiative,” said Chinkuli.
