President Hakainde Hichilema expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the guest of honor at the Kulamba Traditional Ceremony, an event organized by His Majesty Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi at the historic Mkaika Palace in Katete District. This year’s gathering marked a significant milestone, attracting the largest audience to date, as Chewa people from Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia united in a vibrant celebration of their shared cultural heritage. The event underscored the critical need for unity and stability as foundational elements for societal advancement, reinforcing the bonds that connect these communities across borders.
The theme of this year’s ceremony, “Ensuring Food Security by Adopting Climate Resilient and Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices,” resonated deeply with the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing food security, particularly in light of recent challenges such as drought, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a cholera outbreak that have severely impacted essential social services. In response to these pressing issues, President Hichilema assured attendees that his administration would prioritize food provision for citizens through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), emphasizing the need for immediate and effective action.
To foster resilience in the face of climate challenges, the President highlighted the importance of adopting innovative practices in water harvesting, precision irrigation, and the utilization of alternative energy sources, including solar and clean coal technologies. He committed to a thorough evaluation of the development needs presented by His Majesty Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi, ensuring that the concerns of the Chewa people and the broader Eastern Province are addressed with the urgency and attention they deserve. This proactive approach aims to create a sustainable future for the region, reinforcing the government’s dedication to improving the lives of its citizens.
