Zambia has welcomed its fourth mobile phone operator, Zed Mobile, which has officially commenced operations on the 098 platform. Managing Director Chisanga Kaziya announced that the company has invested a substantial US$400 million to establish a local brand aimed at meeting the needs of Zambians.
In a bid to expand its reach, Zed Mobile has partnered with various local contractors to set up service sites across the nation. During the launch event in Lusaka, attended by Technology and Science Minister Hon.
Felix Mutati, Kaziya highlighted the establishment of a cutting-edge call center that will serve as the operational hub for the company. He assured the public that Zed Mobile is committed to becoming a brand that Zambians can take pride in, aligning its objectives with the country’s economic development plans.
Minister Mutati expressed optimism about Zed Mobile’s entry into the telecommunications market, emphasizing that it will significantly enhance phone and internet accessibility throughout Zambia.
He noted that the conducive environment fostered by the government has facilitated the emergence of a local player in the rapidly expanding telecom sector.
With projections indicating a 21% growth in this sector for the year, Mutati anticipates that Zed Mobile’s presence will boost internet penetration from the current 64% to over 80% within the next two years.
The Minister reiterated the government’s goal of achieving 100% phone and internet coverage by 2026, suggesting that Zed Mobile’s involvement could be pivotal in reaching this target. He also encouraged the new operator to focus on promoting financial inclusion through Mobile Money services, which are expected to surpass the current 70% coverage.
Furthermore, the collaboration between Zed Mobile and Baicells is expected to introduce advanced digital services, leveraging high-tech solutions to enhance connectivity across the nation.
