The Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, has announced that Member of Parliament for Petauke Central, Emmanuel Jay Banda, has managed to escape from lawful custody in Chipata District of Eastern Province.
Speaking to the press in Lusaka earlier today, Mr. Mwiimbu revealed that the Petauke lawmaker reportedly fled on Saturday night at approximately 22:00 hours while under guard at Chipata General Hospital, where he was undergoing medical treatment.
According to Mr. Mwiimbu, initial investigations indicate that Mr. Banda made his escape through a window, following a request from his wife, Lombe Banda, for privacy as her husband needed to use the bathroom.
It was disclosed that Mr. Banda had been admitted to Chipata General Hospital for the treatment of a hernia, during which a minor surgical procedure was performed, and medical professionals had recommended salt therapy to aid in his recovery.
Mr. Mwiimbu further stated that the police have initiated a search for Mr. Banda, while the five officers responsible for his custody have been detained as part of ongoing inquiries. These officers consist of three correctional service personnel and two members of the Zambia Police force.
