The 96th Agriculture and Commercial Show was inaugurated by Burundian President General Evariste Ndayishimiye, who emphasized the importance of utilizing the vast land potential in both Zambia and Burundi to ensure food security for their populations.
President Ndayishimiye highlighted the significance of leveraging the expertise brought together by the show to enhance the agricultural sector in the two countries, emphasizing the need to tap into the abundant land resources available in Africa.
He commended Zambia for its production of high-quality maize seed, which Burundi imports for its agricultural activities, showcasing the collaboration between the two nations in the agricultural sector.
The Burundian President expressed optimism that the theme of the show, “creating a competitive future,” will lead to advancements in technology and smart agriculture, ultimately transforming the agricultural landscape in both countries.
President Ndayishimiye also underscored Burundi’s commitment to agriculture, implementing policies to ensure that every citizen contributes to cultivating the land for food production. He thanked the Zambian President for the invitation to the show, recognizing it as a platform for exchanging ideas to drive economic growth through agriculture.
President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized the need for both the public and private sectors to engage in competitive practices within the agricultural industry, aligning with the theme of the 96th Agriculture and Commercial Show, which focuses on fostering competitiveness for the future.
He expressed concern over the impact of climate change on food security, urging Zambia and Burundi to intensify efforts in cultivating the land and increasing food production to combat the challenges posed by the changing climate.
President Hichilema acknowledged the challenges brought about by the drought crisis in the agricultural sector but assured the public of his government’s commitment to addressing the hunger situation. He highlighted initiatives such as smart agriculture and irrigation as part of the strategies being implemented to mitigate the effects of the drought.
The Head of State emphasized the importance of collaboration between Zambia and Burundi to enhance bilateral relations and work together towards achieving food security goals in both nations.
President Hichilema praised Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye for his efforts in restoring peace and stability in Burundi, emphasizing the significance of peace in driving economic activities and overall development.
He reiterated the crucial role of peace in promoting productivity across various sectors of the economy, emphasizing the need to safeguard peace as a cornerstone for progress and prosperity.
Show Society President Bernard Moonga reported a significant increase in the number of exhibitors at the event, with 1,405 foreign and local participants showcasing a wide range of products. He noted a seven percent rise in exhibitors compared to previous years, with a notable presence of exhibitors from China displaying diverse products.
