Kabwata Primary School has been plunged into chaos as more than 25,000 beneficiaries of the drought relief payout program have been gathering since Thursday 18 July to receive their K800 relief packages.
The beneficiaries, hailing from Kamwala, Kamulanga, Kabwata, Misisi, and Kuku catchment areas, have been facing confusion and long lines at the pay-point.
In response to distress calls from concerned beneficiaries, Kamwala Ward Councillor Mainda Simataa, along with counterparts from Kabwata and Kamulanga Wards, visited the school to assess the situation.
They described the scene as chaotic, expressing their dismay at the sight of mothers with babies, the terminally ill, and elderly individuals having to spend nights in classrooms and endure long queues throughout the day.
As a result of the intervention by the councillors, ZANACO has agreed to establish three additional pay-points for Kamwala, Kamulanga, and Misisi to alleviate the congestion and expedite the process.
The previous week witnessed a near-stampede and riot as beneficiaries grew impatient and resorted to jumping over the school’s perimeter wall to bypass the lengthy queues.
This led to the temporary suspension of the program, which resumed the following day under the supervision of armed police officers to maintain order.
