The annual inflation rate for June 2024 has risen to 15.2 percent from the 14.7 percent reported in May 2024, as announced by Zambia Statistics Agency-ZAMSTATS- Statistician General Goodson Sinyenga during a press conference at the Zambia International Trade Fair in Ndola today.
Mr. Sinyenga explained that the increase in inflation was primarily driven by price fluctuations in both food and non-food items, with the annual food inflation for June 2024 standing at 16.8 percent, up from 16.2 percent in the previous month.
The rise in food inflation was mainly due to the surge in prices of essential items such as bread, cereals, fish, milk, and fruits. Additionally, the annual non-food inflation for June 2024 was recorded at 13.0 percent, compared to 12.7 percent in May 2024, with notable price increases in products like spirits, pharmaceuticals, funeral services, photocopying, private security services, hammer milling charge, paraffin, diesel, charcoal, and car insurance.
