Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu has made it clear that the opposition United Kwacha Alliance-UKA is not a legal organization because it has not been registered with the registrar of societies.
Speaking to the media in Lusaka today, Mr. Mwiimbu has challenged members of the alliance to provide a registration certificate. According to the government, the organization does not exist.
Mr. Mwiimbu explains that the president of the opposition United Liberal Party-ULP, Sakwiba Sikota, attempted to register the UKA as a pressure group on February 13th, 2024. However, on the second attempt, he tried to register it as a political party.
He further states that Mr. Sikota was advised to formally apply, but no such application has been made yet. Additionally, another individual named Gibson Bwalya tried to register UKA using someone else’s National Registration Card-NRC, and on the second attempt, forgot to attach a copy of the NRC.
The Home Affairs Minister emphasizes that the Alliance cannot participate in any by-elections or hold rallies because it is an illegal entity. It must follow the law in order to be recognized.
