President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his strong condemnation of corruption, stating that it poses a significant obstacle to Zambia’s development and compares it to a cancer that erodes the nation’s prosperity. During a meeting with the African Parliamentary Network Against Corruption (APNAC), the President urged parliamentarians to take a leading role in expediting corruption-related cases, particularly those involving financial and economic crimes. He emphasized the importance of not politicizing corruption and called on citizens to support the government’s efforts in combating this vice.

President Hichilema stressed the need to remain focused on the fight against corruption and not be swayed by distractions such as ethnic or political affiliations. He highlighted that those involved in corruption often resort to name-calling and raise emotional issues like ethnicity and tribalism to divert attention from their corrupt practices. The President reiterated that the primary focus should be on fighting corruption in order to achieve success in this endeavor.

In his address, President Hichilema called upon the parliament to fulfill its duty in combating corruption by collaborating closely with the executive and judiciary. He emphasized the importance of a united front in the fight against corruption and urged all branches of government to work together towards this common goal. The President also received assurance from Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu, who expressed the ministry’s unwavering commitment to tackling corruption in all its forms.

Minister Mwiimbu further revealed that successful operations had already resulted in the confiscation of assets worth millions of dollars, which were subsequently forfeited to the government. This highlights the government’s determination to take decisive action against corruption and recover ill-gotten gains. However, corruption remains a daunting challenge across many African countries, with citizens bearing the brunt of its detrimental effects. It is crucial for all stakeholders to continue their efforts in combating corruption and promoting transparency and accountability in order to foster sustainable development and prosperity.
