President Hakainde Hichilema announced that Zambia and Botswana have further solidified their partnership by signing ten Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) after a successful visit to Kasane less than two months ago. These MOUs encompass a wide range of sectors, such as Science and Technology, Mining, Minerals and Value Chain Development, Agriculture and Livestock, Railway Transport, the Establishment of the Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA), and Political Consultations, among others. The meticulous crafting of these agreements demonstrates the commitment of both nations to achieve their objectives within the specified timelines.
President Hichilema expressed his deep appreciation to President Masisi of the Republic of Botswana for his visit, which signifies a significant milestone in strengthening the economic ties between Zambia and Botswana. By addressing the challenge of being landlocked, both countries have embraced the concept of being ‘land-linked’ and recognized the strategic potential of the Kazungula Bridge. This bridge not only connects Zambia and Botswana but also serves as a vital link for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to major trade corridors, including Wavis, Lobito, Tazara, and Nacala.
The development of the Kazungula Bridge holds great promise in providing more cost-effective and reliable access to maritime trade routes, thereby boosting trade between Zambia and Botswana. This, in turn, will stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and ultimately benefit the people of both nations. Additionally, Zambia acknowledges and commends Botswana for its remarkable consistency in upholding democracy, maintaining institutional integrity, ensuring economic accountability, and responsibly utilizing its mineral resources for the welfare of its citizens. Zambia looks forward to learning from Botswana’s successful practices in these areas.
