The Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company (LISWMC) recently carried out an enforcement operation aimed at putting a stop to the haphazard disposal of solid waste by unauthorized waste collectors in the areas of Kamwala, Chilenje, and Kanyama.
During the enforcement activity, the inspectors were successful in apprehending a total of seventeen wheelbarrow pushers and seizing twenty-three wheelbarrows that were being used for illegal waste collection in the specified regions.
The individuals operating the wheelbarrows have been formally charged for their involvement in the unlawful collection and improper disposal of waste at locations not designated for such activities within the communities. They are currently being held in police custody pending their appearance before the Fast Track Court at Civic Center.
Furthermore, as part of the operation, five households were inspected and discovered to be utilizing the services of illegal solid waste collectors, specifically wheelbarrow pushers. These households have been issued charge notices due to their failure to engage with authorized solid waste service providers.
The LISWMC is emphasizing the importance of residents in Lusaka refraining from engaging with illegal waste collectors, as their actions contribute significantly to the improper disposal of solid waste within our communities. Instead, the public is encouraged to utilize the services of approved solid waste management providers to ensure proper waste disposal practices are followed.
These details were shared in a press release by Sirre Fofana Muntanga, the Public Relations Officer of LISWMC, and were obtained by Melo News.
