The Small-Scale Farmers’ Development Association, also known as SAFADA, is calling on the government to officially declare the upcoming 2023/2024 farming season as a national disaster due to the expected 50% reduction in national yield.
According to SAFADA Executive Director Boyd Moobwe, the reason behind this urgent call is the severe drought and extreme heat that the country is currently facing. These harsh weather conditions have significantly impacted crop production, leading to the anticipated drastic reduction in national yield.
Moobwe further emphasizes that if this reduction in yield occurs as predicted, it will result in widespread hunger at the household level, posing a serious threat to food security in the country. SAFADA is urging the government to take immediate action to address this looming crisis and provide support to farmers who are struggling due to the adverse weather conditions.
Mr. Mombwe believes that by declaring a national disaster, the government will have the necessary time to gather resources and put in place strategies to help small-scale farmers and families in need.
Additionally, he disagrees with Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo’s assertion that the country has an adequate food supply, pointing out that the current climate changes pose a threat to food security in the nation.
