Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, although the specific type has not been disclosed. The cancer was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate, ruling out prostate cancer as the diagnosis. As a result, the King has commenced “regular treatments” starting from Monday and will temporarily step back from his public duties during this period. Despite the diagnosis, the 75-year-old King remains optimistic and positive about his treatment, eagerly anticipating his return to full public duty as soon as possible. The Palace has chosen not to disclose any further information regarding the stage of cancer or the prognosis at this time.
In light of his diagnosis, King Charles personally informed both of his sons about his condition. The Prince of Wales, his eldest son, has been in regular contact with his father, providing support and reassurance during this challenging time. Additionally, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, who currently resides in the United States, had a conversation with his father and will be making arrangements to travel to the UK in the coming days to visit him. The family is rallying together to offer their love and support to the King as he undergoes his treatment and recovery.
On Monday morning, the King made his way back to London from Sandringham in Norfolk, and according to the palace, he has now commenced outpatient treatment. Despite pausing his public events, the King will still fulfill his constitutional role as the head of state, which includes handling paperwork and attending private meetings.
In situations where the head of state is unable to carry out official duties, there is a constitutional provision in place. This provision allows for the appointment of “counsellors of state” who can act as substitutes for the monarch. Currently, this group consists of Queen Camilla, Prince William, the Princess Royal, and Prince Edward. However, non-working royals such as Prince Harry and the Duke of York are no longer called upon for these responsibilities.
Prince William had previously taken a temporary break from public engagements to support his wife, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, during her recovery from “abdominal surgery”. However, it was announced earlier on Monday that he will be resuming his public duties later this week.
