During a hearing with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Joseph Akafumba, the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs and Internal Security, and his team faced difficulties in explaining the measures taken to address the issues highlighted in the 2022 Auditor General’s report.
During the PAC hearing, Akafumba reported an alarming increase in blood pressure among officers from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The committee criticized the officers for their incompetence and lack of coordination, as they consistently provided uncoordinated and misleading responses to the audit findings.
During the hearing, Akafumba made a lighthearted comment to the committee, suggesting that the officers’ inability to respond effectively may be due to an increase in their blood pressure.
During his appearance before the PAC, Akafumba revealed that the Ministry had a significant amount of unspent funds totaling K29,310,272. These funds were originally allocated for the procurement of equipment for the INRIS project. However, as of December 31, 2022, the funds were returned to Control 99.
