ZNS has partnered with Shoprite to make the Eagles brand mealie-meal available in all Shoprite stores. The mealie-meal will be sold at a price of K230 for breakfast and K190 for roller meal per 25kg. This collaboration aims to provide convenient access to affordable mealie-meal for customers.
This price has been determined based on the production cost, which is calculated to be K190. Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa made this announcement during a media briefing in Lusaka today.
However, ZNS retail outlets will be selling the same brand of breakfast mealie-meal at a slightly lower price of K220, while Roller meal will continue to be sold at K190.
It is important to note that this price does not indicate the introduction of a subsidy, but rather a rationalization of pricing based on the cost of production.
Mr. Mweetwa clarifies that the partnership between ZNS and Shoprite to sell Eagles brand mealie-meal at K230 in all stores is not intended to disrupt the free market enterprise in the country’s free market economy.
While some residents are pleased with the availability of the product, the majority feel that the prices are still too high and could have been lowered.
