Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe has disclosed that Zambia has received recognition and attention worldwide as a new death penalty abolitionist state.
The Justice Minister says this is an indication that Zambia has become a beacon of hope and light in the abolish movement.
Speaking on the sidelines at the 13th international congress of Justice Ministers in Rome, Italy organized by the community of Sant’egidio under the theme “no justice without life” Mr Haimbe reflected that the whole idea of attending these conferences and similar events is to show case what Zambia has achieved.
Meanwhile, Mr Haimbe said it is a crucial time for Zambia being part of the 113 countries who have abolished the death penalty in law and not merely just practice.
He added that it was not sufficient for Zambia to have had a moratorium on execution of death sentence without taking the bold step of amending the law, so as to put an end to the cruel and inhuman punishment presented by the death penalty.
