The Engineering Institution of Zambia- EIZ- has attributed the current floods being experienced in Lusaka and other parts of the country to poor planning.

And EIZ President ABEL NG’ANDU has urged local authorities to employ more engineering professionals to improve city planning.

Mr. NG’ANDU says planning is conducted in local authorities as a one-off activity rather than a continuous process as new infrastructure projects are constructed frequently.

Speaking when he featured on the Sunday Interview program, Mr. NG’ANDU said there is also need to update design patterns of bridges and river crossings to the current prevailing climate change trends.

He also called for a water harvesting policy that will encourage households to invest in water tanks to store rain water which can be used even for home use.

And, Mr. NG’ANDU says the institute has applied to join the International Engineering Alliance.

He said as a member of the alliance, Zambian engineers will be able to practice in countries such as the United States of America and the United Kingdom where they currently are not allowed to practice.

Mr. NG’ANDU said the institute has engaged the South African engineering council which is already a member of the International Engineering Alliance for mentorship.
