CHINSALI (29th November, 2022): Chinsali Municipal Council in partnership with
USAID Local Impact Governance Project has been spearheading the review of the draft Chinsali Solid Waste Management Plan to enhance handling of waste in Chinsali district.
The partnering duo recently undertook the first review of the draft Solid Waste Management Plan which once approved will guide waste management in Chinsali district for the next three years.
Priority areas, overall waste problems in the target areas, current status of waste management, and the action and implementation plan amongst other issues were highlighted during the stakeholder consultation.
Further, suggestions were made as to the role of the community sector in ensuring sustainable waste management practices.
Speaking during the stakeholder meeting at Chinsali Civic Centre, Chinsali Municipal Council Director of Public Health, Meckie Abwino Banda explained that implementation of the plan will ensure that public health is promoted and that waste management presents opportunities for income generation.
“We have put up strategies towards resource conservation so as to enable the local
community to generate money from waste. We also plan on having a Recyclable Collection Centre for the district by the year 2025,” he revealed.
Director Banda further commended USAID Local Impact Governance Project for its
commitment towards strengthening local governance and enhancing citizen participation in decision-making, noting that their role has been cardinal in improving service delivery.
The diverse assembly of stakeholders comprised traditional leaders, Heads of
Government Departments, senior citizens, Ward Development Committees, the business community, market committee, and differently abled.
The Solid Waste Management Plan is being formulated in line with the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP), National Solid Waste Management Strategy of 2004, and Chinsali District Integrated Development Plan.
