On 25th September 1970, at midnight, the tailings dam on the surface suddenly collapsed. A Shift Boss and fifty miners underground battled the devastating forces unleashed by a mud rush. They were trapped and it was totally dark. One Million tons of Mud, sand and water made a terrifying and violent entry into the underground workings of the mine below. Eighty-nine miners on night shift were killed.
YEZI Arts Promotions & Productions has completed a feature-length documentary on the 1970 Mufulira Mine Disaster. The feature length documentary looks at the happenings prior, during and after the accident occurred. It captures the story of one survivor who was deep at 730m underground, and the experiences of many other persons who provide testimonies around the accident.
The documentary brings out a story of Mufulira, Copperbelt and Zambia. It is a sad story but highlights issues relating to mine safety, then and motivates for the future, considering the strategic nature of mining and its contribution to the country’s economy.
