Secondary School Teachers Union of Zambia -SESTUZ General Secretary, SITIBEKISO WAMUYUWA says government should also deal with the people that allowed for the allowances to be paid to the teachers.
Reading a joint communiqué in Lusaka today, Mr. WAMUYUWA appealed to the Ministry of Finance to suspend the deductions, until the affected teachers are given an opportunity to clarify on the way the payments were made.
Last week, the Ministry of Finance announced that it had taken measures to recover over 2 hundred and 9 Million Kwacha in erroneously paid allowances, to serving public officials under the Ministry of Education.
This is from Housing, Rural hardship, Remote hardship, Double Class and Responsibility allowances which were paid between 2017 and 2021.
The unions that are making the appeal to government are Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia -BETUZ-, Professional Teachers Union of Zambia -PROTUZ- and the National Union of Public and Private Educators of Zambia -NUPPEZ.
Others are SESTUZ-, Special Education Teachers Union of Zambia -SPETUZ- United Teachers Union of Zambia -UNITUZ- and Zambia National Union of Teachers -ZNUT.
Last week, Finance Minister, SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE said the action taken to recover the monies, was on the basis of the Auditor General’s findings.
Dr. MUSOKOTWANE added that the action was NOT punitive, but aimed at recovering public resources erroneously paid to ineligible officials.
He also advised those disputing the findings of the Auditor General to follow the laid down procedure in airing their views.
