On the 10th June 2022, the Zambia Russia Graduates Cultural Association (ZAMRUS) joined the Russian Ambassador to Zambia H.E Mr. Azim Yarakhmedov on the celebration of the Russian day at Pamodzi hotel. Russian day is called Day of adoption of the declaration of state sovereignty of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) in Russian written as День принятия Декларации о государственном суверенитете РСФСР. It has been celebrated annually on 12 June since 1992. The occasion was hosted at Pamodzi Hotel and the Guest of Honor was the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Hon. Makozo Chikote MP. The Minister thanked Russian government for the assistance rendered during the COVID Pandemic. The Honorable Minister also mentioned that the other global challenge is lack of food which are as the result of climate change and conflicts. He advocated on the global peace as he concluded his speech. Earlier the Ambassador proudly boasted that Russia was the first country in Soviet Union to recognize Zambia’s independence in 1964. The Ambassador also mentions that the Russian speaking Zambians are increasing in numbers and currently standing at 6000 people.
The ZAMRUS is an alumni association of former Zambian students who studied in Russia and the former Soviet republics, it was represented by madam President Ms. Patricia Kalinga, the Secretary General Mr. Langford Banda, the Treasurer Ms. Luminya Mwansa, the Academic Affairs Secretary Mr. Jestone Mhango, the Cultural Affairs Secretary Mr. Joseph Phiri and the committee member Mr. Benjamin Henrique. Others were Ms. Kabanda Chewe, Mr. Frank Mwangilwa, and Dr. Elias Mwanei.
The President in her speech thanked the Russian Government for the opportunities given to the Zambians to study on Scholarships. She narrated that one of the association’s goals is to reunite the graduates from Russia, then promote and develop Russian culture in Zambia as well as Zambian culture in Russia with the intention of strengthening bilateral relations. The association President told the attentive audience that ZAMRUS office is creating the platform that will attract Russian investors and solicit for jobs of its members and boost economic development for Zambia. The Russian day celebration was graced by honorable Members of Parliament, Zambians opposition political parties, diplomatic corps and Government Officials. The performances were graced by the Russians.
