The Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Rt. Hon. Dr. Nelly B. K. Mutti, MP, FAPRA, has called for the reinstatement of Holy Cross Secondary School in Mongu as a boarding school. The revitalization of Holy Cross Secondary School into a boarding school aims to restore its former excellence and provide a better learning environment for students, especially the girl child and those coming from vulnerable communities.
The Speaker made the appeal during the NellyMutti Foundation’s annual Awards Ceremony, highlighting the importance of quality education in shaping the future of Zambia’s youth. The ceremony, held on March 18, 2026, in Lusaka, recognized the exceptional academic performance of over 6 graduating Law students from various universities across the country.
The event was graced by Hon. Dr. Douglas Siakalima, MP, Minister of Education, who lauded the Speaker’s passion for education and community development. Dr. Mutti’s call to action is driven by concern over the underperformance of both grade 9 and 12 students from Western Province, which in the last 4 years has consistently ranked among the lowest in the country. The Western Province needs to conduct a comprehensive study of its education landscape in order to better appreciate the underlying causes of the poor performance among the students.
Therefore, by revitalizing Holy Cross Secondary School as a boarding school, the Speaker believes that the institution can regain its former glory and provide a nurturing environment for students to excel. As a testament to her commitment, Dr. Mutti announced plans to visit Mongu on March 27, 2026, ahead of the Kuomboka Ceremony, where she will donate through the NellyMutti Foundation over 100 mattresses and other essential items to her former school.
The NellyMutti Foundation, known for its humanitarian work and promotion of education excellence, is dedicated to empowering young Zambians and promoting climate action. And through initiatives like the annual Awards Ceremony, the Foundation aims to inspire and support the next generation of leaders.
As we celebrate the achievements of our outstanding graduates, let us join hands in answering the Speaker’s call to revitalize Holy Cross Boarding School and unlock the potential of Zambia’s youth. Together, we can build a brighter future for our nation.
