Livingstone, Zambia | 16 July 2025 – Hon. Warren Mwambazi, Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), has urged decisive reforms in natural resource governance to ensure transparency and accountability in the extractive sector.
Speaking at the ongoing AFROSAIE Annual Extractive Industries Workshop and WGEI Annual Steering Committee Meeting in Livingstone, Hon. Mwambazi emphasised the critical role of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in auditing the rapidly expanding extractive industries.
“If we can’t measure it, then we can’t manage it,” he stated, underscoring the importance of data-driven oversight, robust audits, and evidence-based governance. He called for enhanced skills and capacity-building for SAIs to keep pace with the complexities of the sector.
The workshop, attended by auditors, policymakers, and governance experts from across Africa, aims to strengthen oversight mechanisms and promote best practices in natural resource management. Hon. Mwambazi’s address highlighted the urgent need for greater accountability to ensure that mineral wealth benefits all citizens.
As debates continue, stakeholders are expected to draft actionable recommendations to improve audit effectiveness and governance in Africa’s extractive industries.
