The family of the late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has announced that he will be laid to rest in South Africa following a failure to reach an agreement with the Zambian government on his send-off.
Lungu, who passed away while receiving specialised medical treatment in South Africa, will be buried in accordance with his family’s wishes. In a statement, the family described this period as deeply emotional and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences from across the continent and the world.
They also extended their thanks to the South African government for its support and for respecting their decision to hold a private funeral and burial in the country.
The family has appealed for calm and unity among Zambians during this time, while also acknowledging the understanding shown by friends, supporters, and the public.
Further details regarding the funeral arrangements will be shared with the Zambian and South African public in due course.
