Lusaka, Zambia – The Zambian government has formally requested that South Africa accord full military honours to the body of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu (ECL) during its repatriation to Zambia.
In an official statement released today, the government also expressed profound gratitude to South Africa for its unwavering support and solidarity following the passing of the former head of state.
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, conveyed a special message of appreciation from President Hakainde Hichilema to his South African counterpart, President Cyril Ramaphosa. Mr. Haimbe commended the South African authorities, particularly the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), for their steadfast assistance and close coordination with Zambian officials.
“The continued cooperation during this period of national mourning reflects the deep and enduring friendship between Zambia and South Africa,” Mr. Haimbe stated.
The request for military honours underscores the respect and recognition accorded to the late former president, who served Zambia from 2015 to 2021. The Zambian government has emphasised the importance of dignified proceedings as the nation prepares to lay its former leader to rest.
