Lusaka, 11th June 2025 – The Government of the Republic of Zambia has announced that the repatriation of the remains of the late Sixth President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, originally scheduled for today, Wednesday, 11th June 2025, has been postponed.
In a press statement issued by the Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Patrick K. Kangwa, the government cited ongoing “constructive consultations” with the family of the late president and other stakeholders as the reason for the delay. The discussions aim to ensure a smooth and dignified repatriation process.
The delay in repatriation underscores the complexities involved in coordinating the arrangements with the family and other stakeholders, reflecting the need for careful and respectful handling of the proceedings.
The statement assured the public that further details regarding the new date for the arrival of Dr. Lungu’s remains from South Africa, as well as the full state funeral programme, will be communicated in due course. The government expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the postponement.
Dr. Edgar Lungu, who served as Zambia’s president from 2015 to 2021, passed away recently, prompting the declaration of a period of national mourning.
The public and media are advised to await official updates from the government. Further announcements are expected once consultations are concluded.
