Lusaka, Zambia – The Office of the Auditor General (OAG) has announced the completion of a comprehensive forensic audit into the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA), uncovering significant systemic weaknesses in its operations.
In an official statement, Ellen Chikale, Head of Public Relations at the OAG, confirmed that the audit findings highlight critical operational deficiencies within the agency.
Ms. Chikale disclosed that the report has since been handed over to relevant Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) for further investigation and necessary action.
“To support institutional reforms, the report has also been shared with the Ministry of Health to guide the implementation of corrective measures and strengthen internal controls,” she added.
However, Ms. Chikale clarified that, in line with standard practice, forensic audit reports are not made public but are instead submitted to LEAs to facilitate potential prosecutions.
“This approach safeguards the integrity of ongoing investigations and ensures that legal proceedings are not compromised,” she explained.
The findings have raised concerns over governance and accountability at ZAMMSA, a key institution responsible for the procurement and distribution of medical supplies across Zambia. Stakeholders now await further action from law enforcement and the Ministry of Health to address the identified lapses.
More details to follow as the situation develops.
