Nairobi, Kenya | 21 May 2025 – Members of the Committee on Parastatal Bodies from Zambia’s National Assembly, led by Chairperson Hon. Chitalu Chilufya, undertook a benchmarking visit to the Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) of Kenya to exchange best practices in enhancing public financial accountability and oversight.
The delegation engaged in detailed discussions with Kenyan officials, focusing on audit processes, oversight mechanisms, and strategies to improve transparency in state-owned enterprises (SOEs). The visit aimed to draw lessons from Kenya’s experience in strengthening governance, combating financial mismanagement, and ensuring fiscal discipline in public institutions.
A Senior Member of Staff at Kenya’s Auditor-General’s Office welcomed the Zambian delegation, highlighting the critical role of technology and real-time auditing in tracking public expenditure.
“We have adopted advanced digital systems to enhance accountability and efficiency in auditing processes. We are pleased to share these insights with our Zambian counterparts to support their efforts in strengthening governance,” she remarked.
Hon. Chilufya commended Kenya’s progress, noting the valuable lessons gained from the engagement.
“This benchmarking exercise has been highly insightful. We have gathered key strategies on improving oversight mechanisms, particularly in auditing parastatals, which we shall adapt to Zambia’s context to ensure better financial accountability,” he stated.
The visit underscores the growing regional cooperation in governance reforms, with both nations pledging to foster continued collaboration in promoting fiscal responsibility and transparency across public institutions.
The Zambian delegation also held additional meetings with Kenyan parliamentary officials to discuss legislative oversight frameworks and best practices in monitoring state corporations.
This study tour forms part of Zambia’s broader efforts to enhance parliamentary oversight and ensure that public funds are utilised effectively for national development.
