Lusaka, Zambia – 17 April, 2025
President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the European Union (EU) following a high-level diplomatic engagement with a visiting EU delegation.
The delegation of European Union Heads of Mission accredited to Zambia was led by Her Excellency Ms. Rita Laranjinha, Managing Director of the European External Action Service (EEAS), and His Excellency Mr. Henrik Hololei, Hors Classe Adviser to the Director-General for International Partnerships of the European Commission.
President Hichilema described the discussions as engaging and productive, with both parties exploring matters of mutual interest and shared values between Zambia and the European Union.
“In light of the evolving global geopolitical landscape, EU-Zambia relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, are increasingly vital,” said President Hichilema. “We recognise the critical role of collaboration in sectors such as energy, critical minerals, agriculture, and transport infrastructure, including roads and railways.”
The President noted that Zambia remains committed to fostering an enabling environment for sustainable development and economic cooperation. He highlighted the country’s ongoing economic recovery efforts, which continue to receive strong support and confidence from international partners, including the European Union.
“We are grateful for the European Union’s continued confidence in Zambia’s economic recovery efforts and look forward to deepening our strategic partnership,” he added.
The engagement underscores the EU’s growing interest in Zambia as a key partner in advancing shared priorities, especially in areas related to green energy transition, resource development, and regional connectivity.
The visit by the EU delegation marks a significant step forward in enhancing diplomatic and economic ties between Zambia and the European Union, setting the stage for increased investment, policy dialogue, and collaboration on development goals.
