LUSAKA – Tensions are mounting at the University of Zambia (UNZA) as staff unions have issued a stern warning of impending industrial action over unresolved labor disputes involving alleged wage freezes and unpaid benefits.
The University of Zambia Professional Staff Union (UNZAPROSU) and the University of Zambia and Allied Workers Union (UNZAAWU) today held an urgent press conference at the institution’s main campus, declaring their patience has run out after months of unaddressed grievances.
At the Heart of the Dispute:
- An alleged wage freeze imposed by the Emoluments Commission
- Unpaid gratuities dating back to 2022
- Delayed pension contributions
- Perceived unequal funding compared to peer institutions in the region
UNZAPROSU President Likezo Pumulo revealed to journalists that unions had submitted their proposals for improved conditions of service six months before the expiration of their previous collective bargaining agreement in December 2022.
“Despite our proactive engagement, the necessary parameters from the Emoluments Commission only came after repeated follow-ups, leaving management without a mandate to implement any salary adjustments,” Pumulo stated.
Multiple sources within the university community confirm that the financial strain on staff has reached critical levels, with some lecturers and support staff reportedly taking out loans to make ends meet.
The unions argue that UNZA continues to receive inadequate funding compared to similar public universities in the region, exacerbating the institution’s inability to meet its financial obligations to staff.
While no specific date has been set for industrial action, union leaders emphasized they would not hesitate to disrupt normal operations if their demands aren’t met within a reasonable timeframe.
“We have shown maximum restraint, but our members’ welfare cannot be compromised indefinitely,” warned a UNZAAWU representative. “The ball is now in the government’s court.”
Attempts to get immediate comment from the Emoluments Commission proved unsuccessful at press time. University management released a brief statement acknowledging the concerns and expressing commitment to ongoing dialogue.
Education analysts warn that any disruption at Zambia’s flagship university could have ripple effects on the entire higher education sector, particularly with the new academic year approaching.
The developing situation has sparked lively debate on social media, with many expressing solidarity with staff while others question the timing of potential strikes.
