Presided over by Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotane, the event drew government officials, financial leaders, and diplomats to celebrate a milestone poised to redefine Zambia’s monetary identity.
The new banknotes and coins showcase Zambia’s iconic natural landmarks, including its majestic waterfalls, indigenous wildlife, and lush flora, alongside depictions of key economic drivers such as mining, agriculture, and tourism. Each denomination prominently features the national coat of arms and the unifying motto “One Zambia, One Nation”—a deliberate nod to the country’s commitment to unity and resilience. “This currency is not merely a tool for trade,” Dr. Musokotwane declared, “but a testament to our shared heritage and a call to safeguard our environment for future generations.”
A 12-month transition period begins immediately, allowing both old and new banknotes to circulate as legal tender until March 31, 2026, after which the outgoing notes will be phased out. Existing coins (K1, 50n, 10n, and 5n) will remain valid indefinitely. The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has launched nationwide awareness campaigns to guide citizens through the exchange process, with Dr. Musokotwane urging vigilance against fraudsters seeking to exploit the transition. “Financial institutions must prioritize public education and combat illicit activities,” he emphasized.
While the redesign celebrates physical currency, the government reaffirmed its push for digital financial solutions to reduce cash dependency. Dr. Musokotwane highlighted digital platforms as critical tools for curbing theft, enhancing transparency, and combating illicit money flows. “Digital transactions align with our vision for a modern, inclusive economy,” he stated, urging mobile money operators and banks to accelerate adoption among citizens.
