March 27, 2025 — Virginia, USA — The African media world is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic voices. Veteran journalist Shaka Ssali, best known as the longtime host of Voice of America’s flagship program Straight Talk Africa, has died at the age of 71.
Ssali passed away on March 27, 2025, in Virginia, USA, just two weeks shy of his 72nd birthday. Born in Kabale District, Uganda, his life journey was nothing short of extraordinary — from being a child soldier, to earning a Ph.D., and rising to global prominence as a trusted journalist and advocate for democracy, good governance, and freedom of expression across Africa.
He joined Voice of America (VOA) in 1994 and became a household name through Straight Talk Africa, a current affairs show he hosted for over two decades. The program became a critical platform for open dialogue on African politics, society, and international affairs. Ssali retired in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of fearless journalism and integrity.
Tributes have poured in from across the globe, with fellow journalists, political leaders, and admirers hailing Ssali as a “bridge between Africa and the diaspora” and a “champion for African voices.”
“Shaka Ssali was more than a journalist. He was a teacher, a patriot, and a voice of truth for the continent,” said one VOA colleague.
Details surrounding funeral arrangements have not yet been released. He is survived by family, friends, and countless admirers around the world.
May his soul rest in power.
