Lusaka, Zambia – Chairperson of the Committee on Local Authorities Accounts, Hon. Misheck Nyambose, who is also the Member of Parliament for Chasefu Constituency, led a key session today as part of ongoing efforts to enhance financial accountability in local governance. The session saw Kalabo Town Council appear before the committee to respond to audit queries raised in the Auditor General’s report for the financial year ending 31st December 2023.
Following the session, Hon. Nyambose posed for a group photo alongside members of his committee and officials from key government institutions, including the Local Government Service Commission, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, the Office of the Auditor General, and the Controller of Internal Audit.
The meeting underscored the importance of fiscal discipline and accountability within local councils, as the committee examined financial management practices and compliance with audit recommendations. Speaking during the proceedings, Hon. Nyambose emphasised the committee’s mandate to ensure transparency in the use of public funds allocated to local authorities.
“As representatives of the people, we are committed to ensuring that local councils uphold financial integrity and operate in line with established regulations. The appearance of Kalabo Town Council before this committee today is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery at the grassroots level,” Hon. Nyambose stated.
Officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Auditor General’s Office provided expert insights into the financial concerns raised, highlighting the need for improved financial controls and timely implementation of audit recommendations by local authorities. The Local Government Service Commission also reaffirmed its role in supporting councils through capacity-building initiatives and strengthening human resource management.
The session concluded with a resolution to reinforce accountability mechanisms in local governance and ensure that audit findings are effectively addressed to promote efficient service delivery.
This engagement is part of the committee’s broader oversight work aimed at enhancing financial discipline in local authorities across Zambia.
