π MUMBWA, Zambia β February 10, 2025
The Zambian Government is considering awarding community-based construction projects to defence and security wings following concerns over poor workmanship and corruption among local contractors.
π Poor Workmanship & Corruption in Local Contracts
Mumbwa Central Member of Parliament and Southern Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, has expressed deep concern over shoddy construction work carried out by some local contractors. Speaking during an inspection of a newly constructed staff house at Kabulwebulwe Primary School, whose roof was blown off barely two months after commissioning, Mr Nanjuwa said the situation was unacceptable.
π “This defeats the entire purpose of empowering local contractors. Corruption in procurement, especially within local authorities, is catastrophic,” he stated.
π Failure to Meet Governmentβs Three Procurement Principles
The government has three key procurement principles:
β Right Price π°
β Timely Delivery β³
β Quality Product π
Local contractors are failing to meet these standards, prompting the government to consider using defence and security wings, such as Zambia Correctional Services, which has impressed with its work on the Mulendema Chiefdom Palace project.
β οΈ Local Contractors Put on Notice!
The Mumbwa Town Council has been ordered to recall the contractor responsible for the Kabulwebulwe Primary School staff house and ensure that the structure is made habitable.
π₯ What Do You Think?
Should the government rely on defence wings for construction projects, or should local contractors be given another chance? π€π¬ Drop your thoughts in the comments!
