In a remarkable testament to Zambia’s democratic progress, the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) and the opposition have secured victories in the recently concluded Pambashe and Petauke parliamentary by-elections, respectively.
But beyond party wins, the real victor in these elections is Zambia’s democracy itself.
Unlike past elections that were often marred by tension, violence, and voter intimidation, these by-elections passed almost unnoticed by the general public—a strong indicator of Zambia’s growing political maturity. Just four years ago, such events would have sparked widespread concern over security issues.
Today, however, Zambia is steadily cementing its status as a beacon of democratic progress in Africa, where political competition is determined by the will of the people, not fear or coercion.
President Hakainde Hichilema congratulated both winning candidates and their respective parties, reinforcing the importance of coexistence, democracy, and national unity.
“Congratulations once again to both candidates and their respective parties. May this spirit of peace and democratic maturity continue to define our great nation. God bless Zambia!” 🇿🇲🙏🏾
This shift towards peaceful elections reflects the resilience of Zambia’s people in shaping a democratic future free from fear and division.
