LUSAKA – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan, is in Zambia for a 10-day official mission to evaluate issues related to freedom of expression.
The visit, conducted at the invitation of the Zambian government, aims to assess the country’s legal frameworks, policies, and the safety of journalists. During her time in Zambia, Khan will engage with government officials, civil society organizations, journalists, and other stakeholders to collect information that will shape strategies to strengthen freedom of expression in the country.
Speaking during a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe in Lusaka, Khan expressed her commitment to the mission.
“I will be able to give you advice and discuss recent developments on human rights and how to strengthen your government’s commitment to human rights. I will present my findings on freedom of expression on the last day of the visit, January 31, 2025, and I will speak to the media. I welcome the invitation from your government,” Khan stated.
Minister Haimbe reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to transparency and fundamental rights, pledging the government’s cooperation with the UN mission.
“Your interaction with different stakeholders underscores the transparency that is there in this government. We want to ensure that we are governed by the rule of law. We also respect the freedom of expression. We invite you to feel free and have access to all the key stakeholders you want to meet,” Haimbe said.
The findings from Khan’s mission are expected to inform Zambia’s strategies for upholding the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
Khan will address the media and the Zambian people on the final day of her visit.
