Lusaka, Zambia — The Zambian government has responded to a letter circulating on social media that alleges sexual and office abuse by Mr. Rae Hamoonga, the Zambia Police Service spokesperson. The letter, purportedly written by a whistleblower named Hachoongo Hamusola, was addressed to the British High Commission and quickly gained attention online.
In a press briefing held earlier today, Thabo Kawana, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Media, confirmed that the letter is fake. “We have reason to believe that this letter, which claims to come from Hachoongo Hamusola, is not legitimate,” Kawana said, adding that the letter includes the personal mobile number of the ministry, which has raised confusion among the public. “We’ve been receiving numerous calls from people inquiring about the letter, as it improperly contains our contact details.”
Kawana emphasized that the document’s circulation is part of a broader issue of how the freedoms granted to citizens can sometimes be misused. “From this incident, we can conclude that the freedoms we’ve given our people are being abused,” he stated, reinforcing the need for responsible communication.
The Permanent Secretary assured the public that law enforcement agencies are already investigating the matter. “The police are on top of this issue and are closing in on those responsible. The culprits will be caught very soon,” he added.
Kawana called for a more responsible approach to public discourse, urging citizens to avoid actions that could cause harm to individuals or tarnish the country’s image. “Let us desist from such behavior that aims to bring others down and cause embarrassment to our nation,” he concluded.
The Zambian government’s swift response seeks to reassure the public that such malicious activities will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with in accordance with the law.
